Mall Haul Phenomena

14 Apr

Lately a brand new fashion trend has emerged- and its not the type you would expect. Youtube has been booming with new self-made videos known as “Mall Hauls.” These videos consist of girls (or guys) sitting in front of their webcams telling their  eager audiences what they have bought, or “hauled”, from their local malls.  This particular video posted by “JuicyTuesday” consists of an overzealous blonde rambling for 15 minutes about her purchases from Forever 21, Charlotte Russe and other consumer chain stores. The bubbly, somewhat agitating, blonde shows her purchases which include, 3 similar round aztec inspired earrings, 2 pairs of identical ripped jeans but in different colors, and 2 of the same shirts, but, also, in different colors.

This girl seems to be the absolute furthest thing from a fashion expert, so it makes me wonder how this phenomena has gained so much popularity. Then I look at the seven pages of comments written and the 28,000 views on the video and realize that her fans are people that shop just like her at stores where you can purchase cheap, poorly made, fashionable clothes. Now the tweens and teens have Youtube to look to for the latest trends instead of just the fashion magazines that my 1990s generation had.

Watching the video is like watching the aftermath of a car crash; you know you shouldn’t look at the damage but you can’t help but be intrigued enough to look. If your a girl between the ages of 12-16, check out the video to see the new “hottest” trends that you may or may not be interested in. If your a serious fashionista, check out this video at your own desecration and try not to laugh or be mildly horrified.

Be Stupid Ad Campaign.

12 Apr

So, Diesel Jeans has been running an ad campaign advocating “stupidity.” The ad’s started popping up in the magazines that I read around early January. Since then, the campaign has grown to a completely new level. This ingenious campaign appeals to the youth and merges rebellion, fashion, and communications superbly. Check it out the campaign’s new video..
